# Device groups

A device group is a set of devices that is used for organizational purposes. \
The standard user will be able to access a limited number of groups, this way the admin can limit the visibility of each group by user.

### Add a device group

1. Use **+ Add group** button (ref. 1 here above) to create a new group in the relative hierarchy level (column A here above)
2. Use the "**plus**" button (ref. 2 here above) to create a new level

### Add a group category

Categories are required to be able to create sub-groups.\
For example, here above, is a three level structure Visup, Dealer and Customer *(A, B, C)*

### Group managing

To create sub-groups, you need to have at least a lower level category first. \
For example, this is a two level structure Visup and Dealer

When you click on the box you want to manage, a **list of users** with permissions related to that group (ref. 2 here above) is shown on right side. At the same time a **+ Add group** button appears into the next available level (ref. 1 here above) to add sub-groups in it.

{% hint style="info" %}
Categories are a way to assign user permissions to top-level groups which will propagate to all their sub-groups
{% endhint %}

#### Assign a device to a group

You can change a machine group in the "Change Group" popup, accessed from the action menu in the [device list](https://admin-things5.gitbook.io/things5/device/manage-devices/device-list) item (ref. 1 here below), the available groups (ref. 2 here below) can be seen in the list.
